Numerical modeling of black holes as sources of gravitational waves in a nutshell
نویسنده
چکیده
These notes summarize basic concepts underlying numerical relativity and in particular the numerical modeling of black hole dynamics as a source of gravitational waves. Main topics are the 3+1 decomposition of general relativity, the concept of a well-posed initial value problem, the construction of initial data for general relativity, trapped surfaces and gravitational waves. Also, a brief summary is given of recent progress regarding the numerical evolution of black hole binary systems.

Three-Body Encounters of Black Holes in Globular Clusters
Evidence has been mounting for the existence of black holes with masses from 102 to 104 M⊙ associated with stellar clusters. Such intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) will encounter other black holes in the dense cores of these clusters. The binaries produced in these interactions will be perturbed by other objects as well thus changing the orbital characteristics of the binaries. These binari...
متن کاملGravitational waves, black holes and cosmic strings in cylindrical symmetry
The emission of gravitational waves by black holes is under intense investigation, in preparation for the expected observational study of black holes and other astrophysical objects by upcoming gravitational-wave detectors. Most of this work is either numerical or in an approximation, since we lack a full physical understanding of the dynamics of black holes and gravitational waves. The accepte...
متن کاملGravitational waves from inspiraling binary black holes
Binary black holes are the most promising candidate sources for the first generation of earth-based interferometric gravitational-wave detectors. We summarize and discuss the state-of-the-art analytic techniques developed during the last years to better describe the late dynamical evolution of binary black holes of comparable masses. متن کاملGravitational waves from merging compact binaries
Largely motivated by the development of highly sensitive gravitational-wave detectors, our understanding of merging compact binaries and the gravitational waves they generate has improved dramatically in recent years. Breakthroughs in numerical relativity now allow us to model the coalescence of two black holes with no approximations or simplifications. There has also been outstanding progress ...
متن کاملFormation of black hole and emission of gravitational waves
Numerical simulations were performed for the formation process of rotating black holes. It is suggested that Kerr black holes are formed for wide ranges of initial parameters. The nature of gravitational waves from a test particle falling into a Kerr black hole as well as the development of 3D numerical relativity for the coalescing binary neutron stars are discussed.
